Open letter to the people of Japan from a U.S. veteran

bobby and red

This letter is written and shared by Bobby, an Army veteran who honorably adopted her dog Red through Pets for Patriots. When I see the absolute devastation and destruction in Japan, my emotions go to a level that is difficult for me to approach. Seeing the horrors that the people encountered first in the earthquake, and then the tsunami, would put fear in one's mind beyond conceivable reality. For anyone to know or not know that they might have lost a mother, father, wife, child, relative or a friend - and then be confronted with the possibility of a nuclear meltdown - would clearly push a … [Read more...]

Pets for Patriots Pet Update: Annie

snuggler annie

Annie looking like quite the snuggler... As you may know, we're experimenting with a new effort to highlight some of the most special pets at our shelter partners that are still in search of their forever homes. Recently we profiled Barley, a beautiful dog who has spent most of his life in a Connecticut shelter in spite of being an all-around great dog. Today we add to the 'can't believe no one adopted this pet yet' list a beautiful senior dog named Annie. She is currently being cared for by the Allen County SPCA in Fort Wayne, Indiana and is in desperate need of a real, forever home. … [Read more...]

Meet Barley: possible the best dog ever

barley

We're going to experiment with ways to highlight some very special pets at shelter partners, pets that for one reason or another just aren't getting adopted - in spite of being truly wonderful animals. Today we focus on Barley, a German Shepherd/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix in Connecticut who is available through our partner Outreach To Pets In Need (OPIN), which works in cooperation with Stamford Animal Care & Control. Maybe you, or someone you know, will be his forever home. … [Read more...]

Eli the three-footed cat needs a home!

eli

A few days ago I wrote about Eli, a Pennsylvania cat surrendered to his veterinarian for a life-saving foot amputation. As you can see from this newest picture Eli is quite the looker, and is still looking for that special family to call his own. Eli is recovering well. He's a young cat with a full life ahead of him (nine, as rumor has it!). If you or someone you know is interested to give Eli the love he needs and deserves, please contact Dr. Erin Kalo directly at 570-675-3406 (w) or 717-712-8974 (m). At the very least, please share this post! … [Read more...]

Save Eli the cat!

elithecat

Eli the incredibly handsome cat! Occasionally we get requests from the public to help spread the word about a special animal in need. This week we were contacted by a veterinarian in Pennsylvania about Eli, a very special cat whose owner relinquished him to the vet after Eli's right hind leg got caught in a trap. Eli underwent successful amputation surgery and desperately needs a loving, forever home. For now, he's recuperating at the veterinarian's office in Dallas, Pennsylvania (near Scranton and Wilkes-Barre). … [Read more...]

The first time I saw Red

red

This is the first in a series of guest posts from one of our member Patriots, Bobby, a disabled veteran in Florida who brought a big, goofy dog named Red into her life. ***** The first time I saw Red I was still very upset about Pooh. Remember I said I had cried at the shelter. Red was in his pen and I was petting him through the wire. He kept licking my hand and I felt no fear. Red is a big boy, and to some I would  think a little intimidating. The next time I went back to the shelter, while I was petting Red they came to take him for his photo. For some reason Red was terrified. He laid … [Read more...]

Happy ending to Davey’s not-so-excellent adventure

davey

It's been nearly two weeks since Davey was adopted and then, without warning, took off into the North Carolina woods near Camp Lejeune. I'm thrilled to report that as of last night, Davey is back home with his new family! … [Read more...]

Lost in North Carolina: find Davey!

davey again

Last week I was over the moon when one of our member Patriots and his family adopted a four year-old dog who was abused and neglected by his previous owner. Just two short days later, Davey took off into the woods near Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. We need to help this family bring Davey home safe and sound immediately. Davey is between 60-70 pounds and was last seen wearing a bright green collar with a six foot red leash. Because of his previous abuse, he does not bark and is averse to strangers, though he is not aggressive and has a gentle nature. Davey has heartworms and … [Read more...]
