Q&A: How do I stop my dog from eating feces?

My newly adopted dog tends to eat his feces and other dogs’ feces that he finds. How can I stop him from doing this?

- Leonard

As for the feces eating, this really just comes down to management. That is, be there when he has access to his own or other dog’s feces so you can remove him from the area and/or clean up the feces.

As for eating other things you don’t want him to (such as paper), again, your job is to manage him like you would a young child and do your best to set him up for success. Don’t allow him to have access to things that you don’t want him to have, so that the behavior is prevented from becoming a stronger habit. Also, provide him with toys that are stuffed with his normal meals and/or special treats so that you are giving him things that adequately compete with paper and other things you don’t want him to play with.
